NAFTAs Personal Fitness Trainer Certification Program includes a 4 day workshops that gives you the relevant skills that will assist in designing unique exercise programs based on your clients' goals, abilities and needs.

Obtaining a NAFTA's Personal Fitness Trainer Certification demonstrates to potential employers your commitment to the profession and is valid for two years from the date of issue. Personal Fitness Trainer certificants must hold current adult CPR and AED certification from a recognized provider.
NAFTA does not offer refunds, transfers nor course credits for any purchase or incomplete course.
Participants have 90 days from the date of purchase to complete the course. If not completed within the 90 days, you can request a 30-day extension but it must be requested prior to the 90 day expiration date.
The primary learning objectives for the NAFTA Personal Fitness Trainer Level 1 Course is that it is centered on a combination of scientific knowledge, practical application, and interpersonal skills.
Scientific Knowledge and Core Competencies
- Anatomy and Physiology: Develop a deep understanding of human anatomy, exercise physiology, and biomechanics (the mechanics of body movement) to design safe and effective exercise programs.
- Exercise Science: Learn how the body responds and adapts to physical activity, including cardiovascular conditioning, strength training, and flexibility exercises, to promote progression and prevent plateaus.
- Nutrition and Diet: Understand the fundamentals of sports and exercise nutrition, including the role of macronutrients and micronutrients, to educate clients on making informed dietary choices that support their fitness goals.
- Safety and Emergency Procedures: Become proficient in all safety rules and regulations governing exercise, including proper exercise technique and the ability to administer emergency first aid/CPR if a medical situation arises
Client Management and Program Design
- Client Assessment: Master the skills needed to conduct thorough fitness and health assessments, including identifying risk factors, current fitness levels, and any muscle imbalances or dysfunctions.
- Goal Setting: Learn to work with clients to set realistic, goal-oriented plans (e.g., for weight loss, muscle gain, speed, or agility).
- Program Design and Implementation: Acquire the ability to develop and implement individualized, evidence-based exercise programs that are tailored to the client's specific needs, limitations, and goals, modifying as necessary based on progress and feedback.
- Proper Form and Technique: Be able to effectively demonstrate exercises, monitor client technique, and explain corrective measures to ensure safety and maximize results.
- Progress Tracking: Understand how to monitor and track client progress effectively, using data to make informed program adjustments.
Interpersonal and Business Skills
- Communication Skills: Develop excellent listening and verbal communication skills to build strong rapport, convey complex information clearly, and provide effective feedback.

Practical Exam: Fitness Assessments: Cardiorespiratory (sub-maximal); Muscular strength and endurance, Flexibility, Body Composition, Postural and Movement Screens
NAFTA is including the NAFTA CPR/AED course as part of our course packages! You will be required to complete the online course prior to receiving Certification.
Requirements
The following eligibility requirements have been implemented for the certification exam:
- Have completed high school (or equivalent).
- You must be at least 18 years of age.
- You must hold adult CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) certification and it must be current at the time of the exam. Those submitting proof of CPR with their application will be exempt from future CPR audits, up to the expiration date of the certification. (You may sit for the exam without proof of CPR; however, you will not receive your exam results until you provide proof of current CPR certification.)
- Hold a current CPR/AED certification with a live skills check.
- You must hold current certification in Basic First Aid and it must be current at the time of the exam. Those submitting proof of First Aid Certification with their application will be exempt from future audits, up to the expiration date of the certification. (You may sit for the exam without proof of First Aid Certification; however, you will not receive your exam results until you provide proof of current First Aid certification.)
- Present a current government-issued photo ID with signature (driver's license, passport, military ID)
Recertification
To get recertified in this certification you either need to earn 15 CEU's or take a new certification workshop. To apply for recertification, please log in to your account.
